Dad's Surprise for Mom

My mom and dad have been together since the beginning of time--long before the beginning of MY time! However, they had never gotten married. Mom had broached the subject several times, but after a while, didn't "go there" any more.

Dad is kinda quiet and sometimes doesn't say much about what he is thinking. We were already having a dream trip with going to the Barbra concert--a life long dream of mom's--and then going to San Francisco--one of mom's favorite places. However, dad decided to make the trip even more memorable. Dad planned a "surprise" for mom.

He was not sure when to present the "surprise" to mom. He wondered if he should give her the "surprise" before the concert, at the concert, or on her birthday, which is January 1st. He decided that her birthday would be the best time to surprise her.

Well, at 5:30 am New Year's Eve, some rotten kids woke us up by banging on our hotel room door. I, of course, had to run to the door and yell at them to go away, that mom and dad were still sleeping, but it woke them up and they couldn't go back to sleep. So the day started.

We hung out and watched the New Millennium come in around the world. It was exciting. In the afternoon we checked out of the hotel and drove into Vegas. We walked around, mom and dad had dinner and then went to the concert. After the concert, we hung out until the parking lot cleared out, which took 2 1/2 hrs, and then went to the airport. Now, I was not tired, I had gotten plenty of sleep, but mom and dad had not. We left Vegas and got into San Francisco around 9:00 am.

In San Francisco, it took a while for me to get reunited with mom and dad and for them to get the rest of their stuff--important things like MY FOOD. Then we had to rent a van which took a while as we had to go out of the airport to do this. It was about 10:30 before all this stuff was done. Now the dilemma, what to do for the next 5 ½ hrs until we could check in to our cottage. By now mom and dad have been awake for a very long time. We stopped in Sausalito, ate, and then drove up to Point Reyes. Since we still had time to kill, we went to the beach and had a grand time. At around 4:00 we headed for Windsong Cottage, after stopping to pick up some groceries. We got to the cottage and got settled in. By this time mom and dad were just short of drooling! They had dinner and then mom said she was off to bed. Since dad wanted mom to remember the "surprise," he decided to wait to give it to her, even though it was her birthday.

The next morning, after a LONG nights sleep, dad was drinking coffee and mom was resting. Dad got up, rummaged through his stuff and said to mom "I had a birthday present that I didn't give you yesterday." He then handed mom a small black box. Now, dad had given mom a very pretty pearl ring and earrings for Christmas. So the first thing out of mom's mouth was "you already gave me a ring and earrings." Dad told her to just "open it!"

Mom opened the box and there was the most beautiful engagement ring!!! She just looked at dad.
Then dad said
""

Mom looked at the ring, looked at dad and said
"Of course I will marry you!"
